Getting around Pattaya: songthaews, scooter rental, ride apps and cars

Pattaya is relatively compact and there are several ways to get around, from inexpensive songthaews to app-based taxis. Here are the main options and when each one is most useful.

Songthaews

Blue pickup trucks with two bench seats operate as shared transport along popular routes in central Pattaya and Jomtien. Regular route journeys are usually inexpensive. If you ask a driver to take you directly to a specific address, agree on the fare before the trip.

Renting a scooter

  • A scooter can be convenient if you are staying in Pattaya for more than a few days and want to move freely between neighbourhoods.
  • Before renting, check the required driving documents, insurance terms and rental conditions.
  • Inspect the scooter and photograph any existing damage before you leave the rental shop.
  • Always wear a helmet and follow local traffic rules.

Grab and Bolt

Ride-hailing apps are convenient when you do not want to navigate public transport or ride a scooter. The fare is normally shown before you confirm the trip, while payment options depend on the app. They are especially useful in the evening, during rain or when travelling with luggage. Renting a car

A car is more useful for trips outside central Pattaya and exploring nearby areas. Before renting, check licence requirements, the deposit, insurance coverage and liability conditions. In central Pattaya, a car can be less convenient because of traffic and parking.

Road safety

Thailand drives on the left, and Pattaya traffic can feel busy and unfamiliar to new visitors. If you have limited scooter experience, start on quieter streets before riding in heavy traffic. In the evening and at night, choose your transport based on road conditions and your own ability to travel safely.

In short

Use songthaews for inexpensive trips along common routes, a scooter for flexibility if you have the appropriate documents and experience, Grab or Bolt for convenience, and a rental car for journeys outside the city centre.
