SIM cards, internet and money in Pattaya: mobile, ATMs and exchange

Mobile service and money are among the first things to sort out after arriving in Pattaya. SIM cards, mobile internet, cash and everyday payments are generally easy to arrange once you know the main options.
Mobile operators
Thailand’s main mobile networks include AIS, True and dtac. Coverage around Pattaya is generally good, and tourist SIM cards and eSIMs are available at airports, shopping centres and official operator stores. For a longer stay, a regular local plan may offer better value.
Currency exchange
Dedicated exchange booths often offer better rates than hotels and tourist services. Compare several exchange points before changing money and check the buying rate for your specific currency. Rates for some currencies may also vary depending on the denomination and condition of the banknotes.
ATMs and fees
- Thai ATMs usually charge an additional fixed fee when you withdraw cash using a foreign card.
- If your bank allows it, making fewer, larger withdrawals can reduce the impact of fixed ATM fees.
- If an ATM offers to convert the transaction into your home currency, compare the rate carefully. Choosing to be charged in Thai baht is often the better option.
Payments and transfers
Cards are widely accepted in supermarkets, shopping centres, hotels and many cafés. Smaller shops, markets and local businesses may prefer cash or QR payments. PromptPay is used throughout Thailand, although full access generally requires a Thai bank account.
In short
Get a local SIM or eSIM, compare exchange rates, check ATM fees before withdrawing cash and pay in Thai baht when it gives you the better conversion. Next, see how to get around Pattaya by songthaew, scooter, Grab or Bolt →
